March, 2015 - CAMBRIDGE, POLAR EXPLORATION MUSEUM

On this visit to Cambridge we made sure to be there on a day when the Polar Exploration Museum was open.  We had missed the open hours the last times we were there and both Sandra and I really wanted to see it.  We were not disappointed.  The museum is associated with a society dedicated to Polar research and preservation.  Also, they are connected to Cambridge University and offer Masters and Phd Degrees in fields related to their work.  Small and somewhat centered on British explorers, but has excellent exhibits on the exploration of both Poles.  I expressed disappointment at no mention of the St. Roch, the RCMP boat that spent many years operating in the arctic and was the first vessel to circumnavigate North America.  I was advised that they did have a special exhibit on the St Roch a few years ago, so at least they know about her.

In my view a bit too Scott centered for a man who lost so many men due to ego and bad planning.

New high tech gear.

Low tech local gear.

Low tech #2.

Shackleton's lifeboat.  Disaster, but,not a man lost.
Part of the who's who of Polar exploration:
